  1. Hi guys,
some people are commenting that the Impossible Burger is not vegan because one of the ingredients was tested on rats. What I have to say is that not every situation is black and white and I would urge you to dive a little deeper into the topic before just concluding that something isn’t vegan.

Essentially, the heme in the Impossible Burger is what makes it meat-like and this ingredient was questioned by the FDA (because it’s a completely new/revolutionary product), which is why the tests were run on rats. This was done in order to get the product out to market to prove that it was safe for human consumption. The company made sure (at least this is their claim and I don’t have a reason not to believe them) that they found a lab with humane practices and that they used the smallest number of rats possible for the tests. In the end, there were no negative effects. This test was done once, as far as I know, just to prove the safety of the product.

While I’m against animal testing, like I said, I think that not every situation is black and white. With the creation of this product, this could potentially change the way many people view plantbased meat alternatives. This could allow more people to choose the Impossible Burger over a meat burger. In my opinion, in this situation, the benefits FAR outweigh the costs. This is why I would still urge you to still support this burger (obviously, this is your choice but I think it’s for the greater good). Every time someone eats an impossible burger, they might be choosing that over a meat burger. Yes, it sucks that the animal testing had to be done but it sucks more if we stop supporting a product that could help (even the slightest) decrease the demand for meat IN THE FUTURE.

Here’s the article if you want the full details:

    1. Lyndsay – Like I said further up in the thread, there is not one person that lives a perfect vegan/plant based life on this Earth. Your house, your computer or other technology devices, your transportation, etc interfere with animals lives in some way. The informed choices we make to LESSEN our impact on the lives of animals is what counts. And I really can’t see how feeding this product to a test animal would be that hurtful. So if you’re that upset then maybe you should move out of your nice comfy habitat and give up your transportation and your tech devices. Then if you’re living out with the animals in the forest off the land as they do your conscience might be cleansed.

    2. Even if the animal testing is 1 time only and on the fewest animals possible….it is still animal testing and as a vegan I cannot support at all. Supporting a little animal testing is hypocritical and against everything we as vegans stand for. ✌❤

    3. Qwazier3 in that case you should be pushing for free range beef which supports 70% more biodiversity then any type of crop farming. It’s not a perfect system but it is the closest to nature as we can get.

    4. ARK – Read the comment above you about grey areas. It can’t be helped. There is no perfect vegan life. Causing the LEAST damage to the Earth and it’s inhabitants by informed choices is the best we all can do. Sorry if that’s not black & white enough for you.

    5. Cheap Lazy Vegan got to love the hypocrisy vegans employ to justify their position! This animal testing is okay because reasons! These mice getting slaughtered for our crops is okay but don’t you dare kill a cow! HAHAHAHAHAHA can you name a trait that a cow has that a mouse doesn’t that justifies you killing it for your food?

This is your brain on veganism people!

  2. So I would love some feedback on this. I do not understand a vegan diet for cats and dogs. From my understanding, they both ,despite domestication, are carnivorous animals. They will not have the sufficient nutrients to survive on vegetables. Perhaps they could SURVIVE but I would not feel right keeping my dog malnourished. Does anyone else have an opinion on this matter. Maybe there are facts that I am not aware of but this has always been something that bothered me. But on top of this, not trying to start any drama, I LOVE your blog CheapLazyVegan and please keep doing what you’ve been doing. Lots of love!
